THIS JUST IN: Hammers Superior To Drills
Vol.02 No.05
You’ve probably already noticed… but I made some changes since last week.

^ The look on your face right now
This ties in perfectly with what I want to talk about this week.
You ever try to use the back of your drill as a hammer?
Or really anything as a hammer?…
I mean it’s much easier to use what you’re already holding than go find an actual hammer, amirte?
It sometimes works ok, depending on what you’re holding.
But at some point, you’re probaly going to get fed up and just go grab a hammer.
That’s where I was with this newsletter.
I’ve been using my Systomesh platform (HighLevel) to send these emails. And look, HighLevel is a solid tool. Especially for automation, lead nurturing, and a bunch of other things.
But for a dedicated newsletter?
It felt like using the back of a drill as a hammer.
It worked great because it was already there being used for other things.
But once I saw some of the features of beehiiv, I made the switch.
It’s specifically built for newsletters. Simple. Smooth. And it automatically turns every email into a blog post which is pretty cool.
It’s just a better tool for the job (until I hear about the next new shiny object I want to try out)
And that got me thinking…
Tons of small business owners are out there using drills as hammers. Sometimes even wrenches (that’s gonna hurt when it slips)
I get it…
You’ve been using the same system for years. Because it just - works.
But does it?
Is it really worth the extra time to keep doing it the old way?
As the saying goes:
“You don’t know what you don’t know.”
Which is probably why I’m so curious and constantly trying new things. Especially when it comes to technology and software. I want to have the best of the best. (Which is actually the opposite end of the spectrum — more on that another time.)
So how do you start becoming familiar with what you don’t know?
Here’s a quick test:
Does it feel like any of your tasks or systems take longer than they should?
Like, are you spending hours at the end of the day manually inputting quotes or invoices into a spreadsheet?
Or manually sending review requests that could easily be automated?
Do you constantly find workarounds instead of just doing things the way they should be done?
Like exporting data from one system just to re-enter it somewhere else manually?
Or maybe using five different apps to accomplish what one could do?
Or God forbid: still using a printer and physical paper in 2025?!

Are you sticking with it just because switching sounds like a hassle?
Heck, you probably switch insurance companies every year chasing the cheapest rates.
So why not make a simple tweak in your business to save you time and money?
I’m pretty quick at learning new things. But I won’t lie to you — making this switch over to beehiiv took way longer than it should have. Mainly because, being who I am, I had to go through every setting. Every menu. Etc. But that’s just because I’m me lol
I think it’ll be worth it in the long run (and even the short run). Just to have a dedicated place for my main newsletter.
(This is starting to sound like an infomercial the way I’m asking these questions lol)
If you said yes to any of those… congrats, you’re officially part of the drill hammer crew.
But don’t worry. I’m here to help you out — with duct tape (I kid, I kid - but check out Zapier if you do need some digital duct tape).
This Week’s Action Step:
Take a look at the tools and systems in your business.
Ask yourself:
👉 Is this actually the best way to do this?
👉 Is there a tool that could make this easier?
👉 Am I avoiding change just because it feels like “too much work” to switch?
And if you find something that’s slowing you down, maybe it’s time for an upgrade.
Switching doesn’t have to be painful.
What is painful? Wasting time and energy on something that’s only working halfway.
So take a step back. Look at what you’re doing. Look at how you’re doing it.
And if you find yourself using the drill as a hammer too many times?
Go get a hammer!
I know this is kinda vague. But every business is different. Only you know the details behind the inner workings of your business.
But if you need help? Reach out and let me know. I’d be happy to talk it out with you and help you get back some time by finding the right tool(s) for the job. Or even help you use what you already have more efficiently.
Or maybe you’ve already made a switch to a better tool and instantly realized how much time you’d been wasting. Hit reply and tell me your best “Why didn’t I do this sooner?!” moment.
Until next time,
Taylor “hammer-drill” Coffin
